Introduction

Pest Birds cause millions of dollars' worth of damage to Australian buildings every year. Ignoring a bird problem is dangerous because a small problem, left untreated, can rapidly escalate out of control. Pest birds are equipped with overpowering homing instincts that compel them to return to the same spot, each day to congregate in large, destructive numbers. Bird droppings and their nesting materials carry harmful bacteria and pathogens that present a serious bio–hazard to humans. Their droppings also contain uric acid which is highly corrosive and will destroy most building material surfaces including car ducos.

Some bird species have been classified as pest animals. Most of these birds are not native to Australia and were introduced many years ago. They have adapted incredibly well to our environment and compete with our local bird populations for essential resources such as nesting areas, food and water.

We offer many different control options that are specifically tailored to suit your needs. We provide pest bird solutions for the residential, commercial and industrial sectors that are effective, reliable and affordable.

Common pest bird species include the

Look for:

  • Birds resting on roofs, handrails, balconies or ledges
  • The familiar noises of young chicks
  • Bird feathers and nesting materials on the ground
  • Damage to stock
  • A concentration of bird dropping's

Pigeons

Columba livia

PigeonPigeon Flock

Commonly referred to as ‘Flying Rats' Pigeons thrive in urban environments sheltering on any small space that is available to them. They are social creatures that live in groups of anywhere between 50 to 500 birds, space and food sources permitting. Pigeons are opportunistic feeders scavenging all types of food scraps. They are prolific breeders and love to nest on the ledges of buildings. They grow to a length of about 35cms and have a diverse colour range. Females birth between four to six young per year, they have a short 17 – 20 incubation term with young birds leaving the nest at about 36 days.

Seagulls

Laridae

Seagull

Gulls are often associated with coastal areas but are common to all major city centres. Once established they are hard to move on as Seagulls will make the same pilgrimage year after year returning to their original nesting spot. Most species of Seagulls enjoy long productive lives sometimes spaning up to 40 years. Females usually produce one brood per year containing 3 eggs in each clutch.

Gulls are the ultimate mess making scavengers equipped with sharp beaks that easily tear into rubbish bags. Gulls are resourceful, inquisitive, and intelligent and have learned to coexist successfully and thrive in human habitats.

The most common type of city dwelling gulls are identified as having a white head and tail, orange to red bills, legs and eye rings with light grey back and black-tipped wings.

House Sparrow

Passer domesticus

House SparrowHouse Sparrow Eggs

Sparrows are small framed birds usually spaning less than 15cms in length but, because of the risk of contamination from their droppings, are considered to be a large pest to many a commercial enterprise, in agriculture and especially in the food and beverage industry. The house sparrow is strongly associated with human habitation, preferring to live in urban settings where food scraps are abundant. Female sparrows and their young are mostly plain brown in coloration whilst males can be identified by the grey crest on their heads, and black goatee underneath their beaks.

A Sparrows life span runs for anywhere between four to seven years and during that time they will return to the same nest location to breed every year. The house sparrow is a monogamous bird, and typically mates for life.

As soon as they come into season, young female House sparrows can breed immediately following their hatching, leading to population explosions. Clutches usually comprise four or five eggs, though numbers from one to 10 have been recorded

Indian Myna

Acridotheres tristis

Indian MynaIndian Myna Eggs

The Indian Myna is native to the Middle East, India and Asia and was introduced to Australia in the 1880's in Queensland to help deal with various insect plagues. Myna's are an omnivorous bird that come equipped with strong territorial instincts. This pest bird has adapted extremely well to Australian urban environments and have continued to rapidly increase in numbers Australia wide.

Indian Myna's present a major pest problem in many environments particularly around high traffic public areas, schools, outdoor food courts and anywhere else there is easy access to food.

Indian Myna's are about 250mm in length, brown and white in colour with a dark green throat, a yellow beak and yellow legs. The average lifespan for an Indian Myna is between 4 to 10 years dependant on the quality of their habitat. Indian Myna's lay two to five, blueish turquoise eggs twice a year. They commonly invade suburban roof cavities building and defending several nests at a time.

Starlings

Sturnus vulgaris

StarlingStarling Eggs

Starlings measure between 18 – 23 cms long and they are native to Europe, Asia and Africa, as well as northern Australia. Starlings compete for habitats with native birds and are considered to be an invasive species. At first sight they appear to be plain black, but on closer inspection their feathers have an iridescent green or purple metallic sheen to them. Starlings will flock to cities in large numbers, but they are also considered a pest in Agriculture. The diets of the starlings are usually dominated by fruits and insects, but they have been observed displaying omnivorous behaviour when living alongside human habitation.

Starlings can produce up to two broods per year with breeding starting from April through to July. Females lay between 4 – 6 eggs per clutch and their young stay in the nest for about 3 weeks.

The droppings produced by Starlings contain many bio – hazards including Fungi that are particularly harmful and even fatal to humans.

First aid information:

Pest Birds are a major vector for the spread of diseases which are contained within their droppings.

These diseases include;

  • Candidiasis – a fungus that affects the skin, gut and respiratory system
  • Cryptococcosis – an infection that starts in the lungs and eventually impacts the nervous system
  • Salmonella - food poisoning
  • Histoplasmosis - a fungal infection that causes breathing disorders
  • Bird Flu / Avian Influenza – can cause death
  • Encephalitis – an inflammation of the brain, usually caused by a viral infection
  • Meningitis - an inflammation of the membrane surrounding the brain and spinal cord

Birds are hosts to fleas and bird mites that constantly feed from the bird's blood while they are in their nests. Once the birds vacate their nesting sites the fleas and mites leave in search of new hosts - usually us. Bites from Bird Mites can be quite painful and will transmit diseases through the blood to their new hosts.
We aim to provide

  • Elimination and exclusion of pest birds.
  • Prevention of property damage from pest bird bio-hazard materials and corrosive droppings.
  • Safer living/working environments free of pest bird related health risks.
  • No more bird related contamination of good

They may enter via loading bay areas, damaged wall vents or damaged sections roofing. Their highly corrosive droppings and nesting materials can clog drains, pose fire risks near lighting and create slip and fall risks.

We conduct a detailed survey of the site identifying any factors that may be contributing to the problem. Then we work with you and your staff to discourage birds by removing or hiding their food and water sources, managing waste disposal on the site and maintaining pest free environment in the future.
